GLOSSARY

ANTE - Chips or cash put up by the players in poker before the dealing of the hands

BANKROLL - The total amount of money a gambler sets aside to gamble with.

BLUFF - In poker, the attempt to take the pot by making the other players think you have a superior hand.

BUST - To go over twenty-one in Blackjack. If you bust you lose.

CALL - In poker, a call is when a player makes a bet equal to the previous bet. Sometimes referred to as seeing a bet.

HIT - To hit a blackjack hand is to take another card. The card received is also called a hit.

HOLE CARD - The card face down that is dealt to the dealer in blackjack. Also, any cards dealt face down in poker.

HOUSE EDGE - The mathematical edge that the casino has on a given bet. Also known as the casino advantage.

INSURANCE - A side bet in blackjack that pays 2:1when the dealer has a natural. Insurance is offered when the dealer’s upcard is an ace.

INSIDE BET - It is a roulette bet placed on any number or small combination of numbers.

OUTSIDE BET - Are roulette bets located on the outside part of the layout. They involve betting twelve to eighteen numbers at one time.

PAY OFF - Your payoff or payback is the return you receive on a wager.

PIT BOSS - The pit boss is the person who supervises all of the games and casino personnel associated with a pit area during a particular work shift. Pit bosses watch out for cheating, settle disputes, and give comps to big bettors. They also handle some of the paperwork required by tax collectors, casino accounting and credit departments.

POT - The total amount of money at stake in a deal.

RAISE - In poker, to increase the amount previously bet by another player.

SHOE - The box that holds the decks for a card game.

SOFT HAND - Any hand at blackjack where the ace can be used as one or eleven.

SPLIT - To make two hands from a pair at blackjack.

STAND - To keep the cards you have. Not to draw any more cards.
